The 6th General Assembly (GA) of TREEADS took place from September 25 to 27, 2024, in the beautiful city of Chania, Crete, Greece. Hosted by the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh) and the Technical University of Crete (TUC), this event brought together project partners and stakeholders from across Europe and beyond, focusing on wildfire prevention, detection, and restoration technologies.

Day 1: Progress and Collaboration

The first day of the General Assembly was marked by insightful presentations from the leaders of TREEADS’ Work Packages (WP), sharing updates on progress and key achievements. Significant strides were highlighted in areas such as detection technologies (WP2), integrated platforms for wildfire management (WP7), and case studies from various regions.

The day also featured a Learning and Governance Stakeholder Workshop, a critical aspect of TREEADS’ participatory approach. This workshop aimed to gather feedback on the pilot installations and foster collaborative development of governance recommendations for wildfire management. Key external stakeholders included the Salakos Volunteer Disaster Response Team from Rhodes, Greece, the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) from Norway, and the ASOCIACIÓN FORESTAL DE SEGOVIA from Spain. These esteemed guests shared valuable insights based on their experiences with wildfires, contributing to the co-creation of effective governance strategies.

The evening ended with a traditional Cretan dinner, providing attendees a chance to continue discussions in a more informal setting, strengthening bonds between project members and stakeholders.

Day 2: Deep Dive into Pilot Projects

The second day shifted focus to TREEADS’ diverse pilot projects. The consortium discussed the advancements of pilots across several countries, including Greece, Spain, Austria, Italy, Romania, Taiwan, Norway, and Germany. These pilots are crucial as they test TREEADS’ holistic wildfire management system in real-world scenarios, providing invaluable data and feedback for the project’s future.

The second part of the stakeholder workshop continued, delving deeper into the lessons learned from these pilots. The discussions highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration and the role of local stakeholders in wildfire prevention and management.

Day 3: A Field Trip to Samaria Gorge

On the final day, participants embarked on an exciting field visit to Samaria Gorge, one of Crete’s most stunning natural landscapes. The excursion, led by the host partners MAICh and TUC, included a walking tour through the entrance area of the gorge. It was a great opportunity to discuss Greece’s pilot in a practical, hands-on environment, allowing participants to connect theory with real-world application.

The visit to Samaria also emphasized the importance of environmental preservation in the context of wildfire management, rounding off the assembly with a meaningful reminder of what TREEADS is working to protect.

The TREEADS 6th General Assembly was a resounding success, marked by productive discussions, valuable stakeholder input, and significant progress across all project fronts. As the project moves forward, the outcomes from this assembly will serve as a solid foundation for future developments in holistic wildfire management.
