In a significant stride for the TREEADS WP6 progress, a trip to Norway was organized to showcase the technology and product prototypes developed during its implementation. This demonstration took place in the Estenstad forest area near Trondheim, as part of the WP8 activities led by the Norwegian pilot.

During the field study, TREEADS partner FRN, with the involvement and approval of local forest owners, demonstrated seedballs in selected forest areas. A total of 2,840 seedballs were prepared, containing seeds chosen by the forest owners – Scots pine and Scots birch. The technology demonstration resulted in the sowing of more than 3,000 Scots pine seeds and over 15,000 birch seeds across three different areas. The success of this replanting effort will be monitored through further field observations in the coming months.

The product demonstrated, a seedball developed in the Forest Plant Biotechnology Laboratory of the LAMMC Institute of Forestry, is intended for the restoration of forest areas depleted by fires. The forest owner was present during the fieldwork to observe the demonstration and gain detailed information about the study.

The team conducting this demonstration included Vaida Sirgedaitė-Šėžienė, Dorotėja Vaitiekūnaitė, and Ieva Čėsnienė from LAMMC; Ragni Fjellgaard Mikalsen, Max Gribble, Edvard Aamodt, Konstantin Motschmann, and Maximilian Weisbecker from FRN; Alexandros Stefanakis from TUC; and local forest owners.

If successful, LAMMC and FRN plan to continue observing this experiment for an extended period, aiming to contribute to the effective restoration of fire-depleted forest areas.
