SUMMARY:Call for Papers: [Drones] (IF: 4.8\, ISSN: 2504-446X) - Special Issue "Drones for Wildfire and Prescribed Fire Science"
DESCRIPTION:Advancements in technology have accelerated the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UASs)/ drones\, for research and operations during wildland fires. Drones offer various benefits\, such as spotting potential flare-ups\, maintaining crew member awareness\, supporting firefighting efforts\, collecting meteorological data for plume dispersion calculations\, assessing vegetation before and after burns\, studying fire dynamics\, conducting spot ignitions\, and sampling emissions to assess smoke hazards. \nDrones’ flexibility\, portability\, night-time capability\, and real-time telemetry provide valuable information to incident responders\, aiding decision-making. The emergence of edge computation and 5G/6G networks enables instant in-flight analyses\, crucial for generating products that support fire management decisions during the response stage. \nThis Special Issue will welcome manuscripts that link the use of UAS to the following wildland fire themes: \n\nFirefighter safety\, management and control; Characterization of fire dynamics;\nPlume dispersion; Detailed forest mapping; Characterization of fire emissions;\nMeteorological measurements;\nDetection and tracking of elements (e.g.\, people\, animals\, vehicles\, etc.).\n\nSubmitted articles and review papers should focus on unmanned platforms\, specifically UASs\, along with related technologies and applications in wildland fire management. These submissions should cover topics related to the main steps in wildfires: prevention\, response\, and restoration. The primary requirement is that the papers contribute new and innovative insights\, methods\, or technologies to the field of UAS in wildland fire management. \nLearn more about the submission here. \nDownload the pdf \n\nFollow us on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date with project developments and latest news!

SUMMARY:IUFRO WP 07.02.13 and 07.02.03 Novel and classical strategies to manage forest health in plantations
DESCRIPTION:TREEADS Successfully Presents at IUFRO Conference on Forest Health Management Strategies in Brazil \nFrom September 17th to 21st\, 2023\, the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) held a technical meeting to discuss novel and classical strategies in managing forest health in plantations. The event took place in Campo Grande\, Brazil\, and TREEADS was delighted to be invited to present its latest work to a community of scientists\, industry partners\, stakeholders\, and national authorities/institutions. \nDuring the conference\, TREEADS presented on “TREEADS awareness + GBD reforestation and restoration technologies.” The presentation was an opportunity to showcase the impact of TREEADS in post-wildfire restoration and address the global concern of wildfires. Attendees were particularly interested in the Bioclip technology\, which was highlighted as a key success factor for forestry protection. New investigations results on Bioclip were also published and released at the conference. \nThe event was a perfect platform to network and promote TREEADS and its impact within the global forestry cooperation. With more than 15\,000 scientists from around 630 member organizations in almost 120 countries\, IUFRO is the leading network for forest science cooperation. TREEADS used the opportunity to highlight the impact that the technology\, which will be applied in Europe\, can have on the Amazonian rainforest\, which experienced over 200\,000 wildfires in the previous year alone. \nThe conference also had a particular focus on forest health management strategies in Brazil\, Chile\, and Paraguay\, promptly connecting TREEADS to the community of stakeholders in those countries. The event was a great opportunity to promote and network further for the dissemination of the TREEADS project to a larger audience. \nThe TREEADS presentation successfully addressed around 40 attendees at the conference\, and the audience was impressed with the impact of the project. The IUFRO conference provided a conducive environment for knowledge exchange and collaboration. TREEADS is delighted to have been a part of such a valuable international conference. \nTREEADS remains committed to post-wildfire restoration and management\, and we will continue to work hard to develop effective and innovative strategies for forest management. \nStay tuned to our website and social media channels to stay up-to-date with TREEADS and its ongoing work. \nYou can visit IUFRO on social media. \nFollow us on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date with project developments and latest news!

SUMMARY:German Pilot – Fire Science of Wildfires and Safety Measures
DESCRIPTION:In a notable milestone\, the German Pilot Consortium\, comprising Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OvGU)\, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM)\, and Schmitz OneSeven GmbH\, successfully conducted real fire tests on 28th September 2023. These tests hold immense significance for advancing the understanding of ground fires\, smoke toxicity\, and safe firefighting techniques. The resulting measurements and data are expected to contribute to the development of effective forest fire containment and fighting strategies. Prior to the fire tests\, thorough coordination took place among the German Pilot Consortium\, local partners\, and authorities. The Flechtingen forestry office\, the Börde district\, the Flechtingen municipality\, and its fire brigades all played instrumental roles in ensuring comprehensive safety preparations and obtaining the necessary permits. Thanks to their support and commitment\, the planned fire tests could proceed smoothly and securely. \nOn the afternoon of 28th September 2023\, Dr. Andrea Klippel (OVGU) and Dr. Anja Hofmann-Böllinghaus (BAM)\, esteemed project leaders\, carried out the ignition on the designated land at the Altmark forestry operation. Over a span of more than two hours\, extensive measurements were conducted\, capturing data on smoke gas concentrations and temperatures. \nIt is important to note that the fire test was conducted under meticulous observation through the use of various drones and ground-based photographic documentation. To ensure safety\, the volunteer fire brigade of the municipality of Flechtingen provided necessary security throughout the test. The photo and film documentation\, combined with the measurement data\, now serve as a valuable foundation for comprehending the spread phenomena of forest and vegetation fires. These findings will actively contribute to the further development of tactics for containing and fighting such fires. In collaboration with the laboratory investigations conducted by OvGU and BAM\, the collected results will be used to develop computational models that predict forest fire phenomena. \nUltimately\, this will pave the way for creating effective protection concepts for emergency services. The German Pilot project team extends sincere gratitude to all those involved in the successful execution of the fire tests. The unwavering support and commitment from local authorities\, the volunteer fire brigade\, and project partners have laid an excellent groundwork for further investigations within the TREEADS project. \nFollow us on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date with project developments and latest news!
